Fencing tournaments begin with a round of pools (at riduculously early times in the morning or three hours late!), usually of 6-8 fencers. Matches last for a maximum of four minutes with the first fencer to reach fives touches being declared the winner. If this is not the case, the fencer ahead at the expiration of time is the winner.
The fencers are then ranked from their pools and are seeded into a direct elimination table (which usually starts after another two hour wait!). At this stage of competition bouts last nine minutes, broken into three three minute rounds, and fifteen points are required to win. The winner advances, the loser is eliminated (noooo!). This continues until a winner emerges! To see how this works click below.
